Explain in detail the difference between FDM and LCD 3D printer?

2022/03/09

3D printing technology is becoming more and more mature and diversified. Many people will compare FDM with LCD 3D printer. Many people like entering the 3D printing industry will hesitate whether light curing or FDM is better? What advantages and pain points do they have? What kind of model is more suitable for different printers? In today's article, Piocreat3D editor takes you to conduct experimental tests from multiple dimensions from printing process to printing parts, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages between FDM and light curing 3D printer. Next, let's have an in-depth understanding of these two 3D printing technologies!
1. Compare the printing process and print the same model file at the same time. The contrast difficulty from slicing to subsequent processing:
FDM 3D printer
① Import the file into creality slicing software ② automatically generate the support and print ③ remove the support after printing.
Light curing 3D printer
① Slice with piocreatbox software ② add some manually after automatically generating the support to print ③ clean with alcohol ④ to support after printing, pour the remaining resin back into the bottle after UV illumination ⑤, and clean the printing platform and material tank with alcohol.
Compared with the total printing time, it is not difficult to find that although the printing steps of light curing 3D printing are cumbersome, the overall efficiency of printing is still much higher than that of FDM 3D printing, which is due to:
1. The 3D model of FDM is composed of lines, and the printing time depends on the amount of materials required for printing. While light curing 3D printing can print a whole plane at one time, and the printing time only depends on the height of the model. Taking dj89 as an example, the printing speed is about 30mm / s.
2. When printing complex models with FDM 3D printer, it will be difficult to support them. It not only takes a long time, but also may damage the models accidentally. Light curing is much simpler, and the support will fall off with a gentle break.
3. Contrast fineness
After enlarging the surface of the model printed by the two 3D printers, it is obvious that the model printed by the light curing 3D printer is superior to the model printed by FDM 3D in terms of fineness. Through the fineness test model, we can see that the thinnest FDM 3D printer can print to 0.5mm. When it is nearly 0.4mm, it can't be printed. The thinnest part of light curing can be 0.025mm, but it has fallen off when cleaning because it is too thin, but it has been formed about 0.1mm.
4. Contrast precision
Although the light curing 3D printer is excellent in precision, the precision is not equal to the precision. Therefore, we made a model to test the precision, designed two columns with a diameter of 5mm, and observed whether the columns printed by the two 3D printers can be inserted into sockets with different diameters. FDM 3D printer 5.05mm basically has no problem. The light curing 3D printer, which is printed with ordinary rigid resin, has no problem inserting 5mm into it.

This means that the gap between bolts and nuts is 0.3mm, which basically means that they are not twisted in. However, because the resin is easier to polish than PLA, it basically takes 5 minutes. Gently grinding away the excess part with sandpaper can improve this situation. And now Piocreat3D also have different resins for different applications. Such as ABS, ordinary rigid resin, high permeability resin, flexible resin and so on. If necessary, partners can consult in detail according to their own needs.
